What Manner of Man We Are

James 1:23-25 – “But be ye doers of the word, and

not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer,

he is like unto a man beholding his natural face

in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth

his way, and straightway forgetteth what

manner of man he was. But whoso looketh

into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth

therein, he being not a forgetful hearer,

but a doer of the work, this man shall

be blessed in his deed.”

What Manner of Man We Are

By Nina Rose Hall

Let us behold ourselves O Christians-

O chosen Ones –

In the mirror each morning and see – and not forget:

What “manner of man” the Scripture declares that we are.

Let us behold ourselves O Christians –

O frail Ones –

And see that we are sinners with deceptive hearts;

We are weak and guilty as we look into God’s perfect law of liberty.

Let us behold ourselves O Christians –

O created Ones-

And see that we are indeed made in the image of God –

To reflect the Holiness of our Creator, is the reason we are so fearfully and wonderfully made.

Let us behold ourselves O Christians –

O children of God –

And see before us the reflection of a helpless child;

Yet a child with a loving heavenly Father who will bless us now and forever with an inheritance that fadeth not away.

Let us behold ourselves O Christians –

O valiant Ones-

And see our responsibility as soldiers in the army of God.

Let us see the battle raging around us and take up our swords in defense of the truth that will set men free.

Let us behold ourselves O Christians –

O humble Ones –

And see ourselves as the servant of all;

Following the example of Christ and anticipating those blessed words from heaven someday:

“Well done thou good and faithful servant.”

Let us behold ourselves O Christians –

O witnesses –

And see that we hold the truth of righteousness;

The truth with the power to save the world – and we have been charged to declare it.

Let us behold ourselves O Christians –

O wayfaring Ones –

And see that we are pilgrims on a journey;

Though the path is rough and steep, remember always:

This world is not your home.

Let us behold ourselves O Christians –

O studious Ones –

And see that we are to be students of the Scriptures;

Digging with fervor to discover the unsearchable riches of Christ.

Let us behold ourselves O Christians –

O wandering Ones –

And see that we are sheep; but no longer lost sheep –

For we have a gentle Shepherd who guides, protects and watches over his own.

Let us behold ourselves O Christians –

O shining Ones –

And see the world around us as it is – black with sin.

Understand that we are the lights of the World – Let your light so shine!

Let us behold ourselves O Christians –

O separated Ones –

And see the distinction put between ourselves and the world.

Let us hold to our standard of holiness – and not be conformed to this world.

Let us behold ourselves O Christians –

O restless Ones –

And see that we have but a short time here;

Let us remain pure and spotless –

For we know not the hour when our Lord shall come.

Let us behold ourselves O Christians –

O called-out Ones –

And see, in our reflection, our serious responsibilities before God –

And let us go forth each day – changed, and with a clear perspective…

Forgetting not, what manner of man we are.
