If you’re like me…
…you’ve probably seen pictures posted on Facebook or Instagram, with the caption “relationship goal!” Some pictures are sweet, others corny, but they all somehow exemplify traits or qualities that people are looking for in a relationship. In examining myself to see what my “relationship goals” are, I realized that I already have a relationship with Someone who displays these traits and more.
Many girls daydream about how Prince Charming is going to woo them and sweep them off their feet with gifts galore and a plethora of love notes, but fail to consider how they might reciprocate his love. Or on the reverse side, some girls plan how they could be the perfect wife someday, but then grow frustrated when they can’t seem to find a man to return their love in the way that they expect it.
But in any relationship scenario, we want the other person’s love for us to be obvious! We want to be wanted! We want to be pursued!
Yeah sure, we all have moody days and spill-coffee-on-your-shirt days and throw-torn-pantyhose-at-your-mirror days, but we want to be loved and pursued on those days too.
For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. …But God commendeth His love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. – Romans 5:6,8
It’s unflattering. We were weak and helpless and ungodly sinners. While we were running from God and offending God and breaking God’s law, He took the first step toward us. He extended to us an unconditional love that we don’t deserve and could never earn. He pursues us on every one of our bad days.
We love Him, because He first loved us. – 1 John 4:19
God didn’t love us because we were lovely. He didn’t pursue us because we were worth it.
Do you wish you were highly sought-after? Do you seek to be pursued? What you’re looking for is seeking you. You may not even realize that you’re searching for a relationship with God, but even so, He is seeking you.
For the Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. – Luke 19:10
This kind of unrelenting pursuit is not something that any human can do. Only God with His perfect, selfless love can pursue me the way that I desire.
My favorite example of Christ’s pursuit of me is found in James 4:8.
Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.
I only need take a step toward God, and He promises to approach me. As I posture my heart toward Him and seek His face, He not only will be found, but He also reciprocates the pursuit. Where other human relationships can feel futile and one-sided, God most definitely promises to come closer to me as I draw nearer to Him.
Stop looking for someone who will pursue you in this world, and turn toward the One who has been seeking you since the beginning of time.
