Love

By Mrs. Pasterski

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16

Valentine’s Day…it’s the season of love!  If you are like my little girls, you like anything that has to do with hearts, flowers, red, pink and celebrating a special, lovey-dovey day like Valentine’s Day!  It’s fun to decorate with hearts and Valentines and craft special messages, gifts and treats for the ones we love!  But what is real love?

The Bible says in Romans 5:8 that, “… God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”  The word “commendeth” means “demonstrated or showed.”  Basically, Jesus showed His love for us by dying on the cross for us.  We can say that real love is giving to others’ basic needs without looking for personal reward.   That’s what Jesus did, right?  He came to earth to sacrifice his life to pay for our sins, even though we don’t deserve His love and free gift.

So how can a girl show this kind of love to those around her?  Well, it starts in the heart.  When we want to show love to others, we need to first be careful that we are not looking for something in return.  Secondly, we have to be willing to “give” and “do” for others.  It’s nice to say “I love you” but we show people that we love them by actually giving or doing something for them.  Maybe this week you could do a special cleaning project for your mom, or make your dad his favorite dessert!  It would be a nice idea to willingly play your brother’s favorite game or read your sister her favorite book.  The key is to think about what would most please the other person.

Of course at Valentine’s Day, your loved ones would enjoy receiving a special note or a yummy treat made by YOU!  Perhaps you could even decorate for and prepare a heart-themed meal for your family!  Don’t forget grandparents, shut-ins, and those who are lonely this winter!  Reach out and show Christ’s love to those who need it most!

A great passage to study on the topic of Love is I Corinthians 13.  The whole chapter is a good one and it might be a fun project to memorize it together with your mom!

Showing love to others demonstrates your love for Christ and helps you to become all glorious within!
